Emotions Express Longing for Joy's Presence
Sadness
Joy!
Joy
Hang on!
Fear
Oh, I wish Joy was here.
Disgust
It's Joy!
Anger
Stand back!
[tries to smash the window open with a chair, but it bounces off]
Disgust
That worked.
[sarcastically]
Anger
Well, what would you do if you're so smart?!
Disgust
I'd tell you, but you're too dumb to understand.
[gets an idea]
Anger
WHAT?!
Disgust
Of course your tiny brain is confused! Guess I'll just have to dumb it down to your level! Sorry I don't speak idiot as well as you, but let me try! Duh...
[the top of Anger's head starts to get brighter and hotter; makes a weird face]
Fear
Oh, thank goodness, you're back!
Disgust
Do your things, we really messed up.
Anger
We found this idea.
Fear
We were just trying to make happy memories.
Joy
Sadness, It's up to you.
Sadness
Me?
Disgust, Fear, & Anger
Sadness? (Why her?)
[baffled]
Sadness
I can't, Joy.
Joy
Yes, you can. Riley needs you.
Riley
Wait! Stop! I want to get off!
[realizes what she's doing]
Jill
All right. Thank you. We will. Her teacher hasn't even seen Riley all day.
Bill
Riley, there you are! Thank goodness!
Jill
We were worried sick! Where have you been? It's so late!
Riley
I know you don't want me to, but... I miss home. I miss Minnesota. You need me to be happy, but I want my old friends and my hockey team... I wanna go home. Please don't be mad...
[as Sadness presses a button on the console, making her cry and admit to her parents that she missed the good old days in Minnesota]
Jill
Oh, sweetie...
Bill
We're not mad. You know what? I miss Minnesota too. I miss the woods, where we took hikes.
Jill
And the backyard, where you used to play.
Bill
Spring Lake, where you learned to skate. Come here.
[Riley continues crying; he and Jill hug Riley and comfort her]

Riley Questions the Purpose of Tryouts
Jill
Riley, what's wrong?
Riley
Let's go!
Jill
You're not going to finish tryouts?!
Riley
What's the point?
Jill
Hey, it will be all right. Let's just-
Riley
Stop saying everything will be all right!
Joy
Hockey!? Oh, no, no, she loves hockey. She can't give up hockey. Bing Bong, we have to get to that station.
Bing Bong
Sure thing. This way, just past Graham Cracker Castle. Hey, that's weird. Graham Cracker Castle used to be right here. I wonder why they moved. Well, that's...odd. I would have sworn Sparkle Pony Mountain was right here. Hey, What's going on.
Joy
Yeah, yeah. I don't know. We'll have to come back.
Bing Bong
Princess Dream World! Oh, no. The stuffed Animal Hall of Fame! My rocket! Wait! Riley and I, we're still using the that rocket! It still has some song power left! Who's your friend who likes to play? No! No, no, no. NO, You can't take my rocket to the dump! Riley and I are going to the moon! Riley can't be done with me.
[Starts chanting; stops chanting; sits down]
Joy
Hey, it's going to be okay! We can fix this! We just need to get back to Headquarters. Which way to the train station?
Bing Bong
I had a whole trip planned for us.
Joy
Hey, who's ticklish, huh? Here comes the tickle monster! Hey, Bing Bong! Look at this! Oh, here's a fun game! You point to the train station and we all go there. Won't that be fun? Come on, Let's go to the train station.
[gasps]
Sadness
I'm sorry they took your rocket. They took something that you loved. It's gone. Forever.
Joy
Sadness. Don't make him feel worse.
Sadness
Sorry.
Bing Bong
It's all I had left of Riley.
Sadness
I bet you and Riley had great adventures.
Bing Bong
Oh, they were wonderful. Once we flew back in time, we had breakfast twice that day.
[choking up]
Joy
Sadness!
[annoyed]
Sadness
It sounds amazing. I bet Riley liked it.
Bing Bong
She did. We were best friends.
Sadness
Yeah. It's sad.
Bing Bong
I'm okay now. Come on. The train station is this way.
Joy
How did you do that?
[dumbfounded]
Unexpected Change in Meeting Schedule
Bill
Ah, sorry. Hold on. Hello?
[puts down Riley and Jill and answers his cellphone]
Joy
Wait, what?
[disappointed]
Bill
You're kidding. Ah, stall for me. I'll be right there. The investors were supposed to show up on Thursday, not today! I gotta go.
[to Jill]
Jill
It's okay. We get it.
Bill
You're the best. Thanks, hon. See you, sweetie.
[briefly kisses her and waves good-bye to Riley; walks out the door, leaving Riley visibly upset]
Fear
Dad just... left us.
Sadness
Oh, he doesn't love us anymore. That's sad. I-I should drive, right? Joy, what are you doing?
[reaches to touch the console, but Joy suddenly stops her with her arm; the other emotions (including Sadness) look at her in shock, much to Fear's own]
Joy
Uh, just give me one second. You know what I realized? Riley hasn't had lunch! Remember?
[nervously; grabs a recent happy memory and puts it on the projector]
Riley
Hey, I saw a pizza place down the street. Maybe we could try that.
[brightening herself up]
Jill
Pizza sounds delicious!
Fear
Pizza!
Disgust
Yes, pizza!
Fear
What the heck is that?!?!
Joy
Who puts broccoli on pizza?!
Disgust
That's it. I'm done.
[walks off, leaving Joy, Sadness, Anger and Fear]
Anger
Congratulations, San Francisco! You've ruined pizza! First the Hawaiians, and now you!
[sarcastically]
Jill
What kind of a pizza place only serves one kind of pizza? Must be a San Francisco thing, huh? Still, it's not bad as that soup. At that diner in Nebraska.
Riley
Oh, yeah. The spoon stood up in the soup by itself! That was disgusting.
Navigating Change and Loss in Childhood
Bing Bong
Joy? Joy, what are you doing? Would ya stop it, please? DON'T YA GET IT, JOY?! WE'RE STUCK DOWN HERE! WE'RE FORGOTTEN!
[Joy ignores his please and keeps trying to get out, once again, to no avail.]
Riley
We... used to play tag... and stuff... But... everything is different now. Since we moved...
[in the memory orb; Joy walks over to the memory and holds it somberly; the memory keeps playing the "video" of Riley's emotional breakdown at school. Joy keeps staring at the memory orb, in complete helpless despair. She sits down and begins to tear up. The sound of a discarded memory of Riley happily coloring as a toddler begins to play next to Joy, who picks it up and looks at it with a sad smile]
Joy
Do you remember how she used to stick her tongue out when she was coloring? I could listen to her stories, all day... I just wanted Riley to be happy... And now...
[tearing up; continues to fight back tears as she picks up another memory orb, this time of a younger Riley telling a story to a ladybug; picks up another memory of Riley playing in her backyard as a toddler; her eyes well up with tears, but she keeps holding them back; unable to hold back her tears anymore, she picks up the sad core memory of Riley crying in school; as she looks at it, she begins to cry, and completely breaks down into hopeless tears. She hugs the three forgotten memories and the blue core memory of Riley crying in front of the whole class until they all fall out of her arms, and she covers her face while sobbing, while Bing Bong sadly hangs his head. Around her, memories fade and disappear; When she wipes her tears from off her face, her tears fall onto the happy memory orb of Riley after the Prairie Dog hockey game. As she wipes the tear off of it, she scrolls through the memory to see it was previously a sad memory turned happy. The sad portion consists of Riley sitting sadly with her parents on a tree branch. Curiously, she "rewinds" the memory to the point where Mom and Dad came to Riley to comfort her. She begins to hear Sadness's description of the memory in her head]
Sadness
It was the day the Prairie Dogs lost the big playoff game. Riley missed the winning shot, she felt awful. She wanted to quit.
[voice-over]
Joy
Sadness, Mom and Dad, the team... They came to help... because of Sadness. We have to get back up there.
[scrolls through the memory to see the blue sad memory of her and her parents turn a happy yellow when Riley's friends come to cheer her on; to Bing Bong]
Bing Bong
Joy, we're stuck down here. We might as well be on another planet.
Joy
Another planet." Who's your friend who likes to play? Who's your friend who likes to play?!
[getting an idea; turns and calls out in a sing-song voice; silence, Bing Bong looks up in surprise]
Bing Bong
His rocket makes you yell "Hooray"...
[also singing]
Joy
Hop in.

A Promise to Save Riley
Joy
Whoo-hoo! Bing Bong, we did it! We... Bing Bong? Bing Bong!
[hurries to the edge of the cliff and looks down at Bing Bong still in the dump]
Bing Bong
Ha-ha-ha! You made it! Ha-ha-ha-ha! Go! Go save Riley! Ha-ha-ha! Take her to the moon for me... okay?
[smiles and waves at Joy, and then fades]
Joy
I'll try, Bing Bong. I promise.
[hangs her head sadly, about to cry again]
Preparing for the First Day of School
Joy
Well, I have to practice. And I don't think of it as playing so much as hugging. Okay! First day of school! Very, very exciting! I was up late last night figuring out a new plan. Here it is! Fear! I need a list of all the possible negative outcomes on the first day at a new school.
[Fear gasps]
Fear
Way ahead of you there.
Joy
Disgust, make sure Riley stands out today. But also blends in.
Disgust
When I'm through, Riley will look so good, the other kids will look at their own outfits and barf.
[confidently]
Joy
Joy." "Yes, Joy?" "You'll be in charge of the console, keeping Riley happy all day long. And may I add I love your dress. It's adorable." "Oh, this old thing? Thank you so much. I love the way it twirls." Train of Thought! Right on schedule! Anger, unload the daydreams. I ordered extra in case things get slow in class.
[talking to herself; runs up to the window and waves at the Train of Thought as it passes through, in normal voice again]
Anger
Might come in handy, if this new school is full of boring, useless classes. Which it probably will be.
Joy
Oh, Sadness! I have a super important job just for you.
Sadness
Really?
[hopefully]
Joy
Mmm-hmm. Follow me.
[leads Sadness to the Mind Manual shelf and starts to draw a circle around her feet]
Sadness
What are you doing?
Joy
And...there! Perfect! This is the Circle of Sadness. Your job is to make sure that all the sadness stays inside of it.
[finishes up]
Sadness
So...you want me to just stand here?
Joy
Hey, it's not my place to tell you how you do your job. Just make sure that all the sadness stays in the circle. See? You're a pro at this. Isn't this fun?
[closeup of Sadness's feet. Joy pushes Sadness's leg inside of the circle]
Sadness
No.
Joy
That-a-girl! All right, everyone, fresh start!
Navigating the Maze of Long-Term Memory
Sadness
Wait, Joy, you could get lost in there!
Joy
Think positive!
Sadness
Okay. I'm positive you will get lost in there! That's Long-Term Memory. An endless warren of corridors and shelves. I read about it in the manuals.
Joy
The manuals? The manuals! You read the manuals!
[it dawns on her]
Sadness
Yeah.
Joy
So you know the way back to Headquarters!
Sadness
I-I guess.
Joy
You are my map. Let's go, lead on, my map! Show me where we're going!
[does a happy little dance and giggles excitedly]
Sadness
Okay, only... I'm too sad to walk, just give me a few...hours... Oh!
[attempts to sit up; falls back down; Joy rolls her eyes and grabs Sadness by the foot, dragging her into Long-Term Memory]
Joy
Which way, left?
Sadness
Right. No, I mean "go left", I said left is right, like, "correct".
[Joy turns right]
Joy
Okay.
[drags Sadness the opposite direction]
Sadness
This actually feels kind of nice.
Joy
Okay! Here we go! We'll be back to Headquarters before morning! This'll be easy! This is working!
Core Memories and Their Unchangeable Nature
Joy
Sadness, you nearly touched a core memory. And when you touch them, we can't change them back!
[stops Sadness from touching a core memory and turn it blue]
The Fate of Memories in the Dump
Joy
Hey! Bring those back!
Worker Paula
They're in the dump. Nothing comes back from the dump.
Worker Bobby
Yeah. Look, lady, this is our job, okay?
Worker Paula
When Riley doesn't care about a memory, it fades.
Joy
Fades?
Worker Paula
Happens to the best of them.
Worker Bobby
Yeah, except for this bad boy. This one will never fade.
[grabs a happy memory; the aforementioned memory contains the annoying TripleDent Gum jingle]
Singers
TripleDent Gum will make you smile...
Joy
The song from the gum commercial?
[shocked]
Worker Bobby
You know, sometimes we send that one up to Headquarters for no reason!
Worker Paula
It just plays in Riley's head over and over again, like a million times!
Worker Bobby
Let's watch it again! TripleDent Gum will make you smile...
[rewinds the memory, and the Memory Workers sing along to the jingle]
Joy
Yeah, I know. We all know the song. Okay, yeah, real catchy, okay.
Worker Bobby
Hey, what do you think? Should we do it?
Worker Paula
Yeah!
Worker Bobby
Okay, here we go!
[shoves the memory orb into the shelf and shoots it up a pipe to Headquarters.]
Singers
TripleDent Gum will make you smile...
Anger
What the...? THIS AGAIN!?
[looks up]
Joy
Wait! Do you know how to get to Friendship Island?!
[to the workers, who are walking away singing]
Riley
TripleDent Gum...
[while using a laptop to talk to Meg]
Meg
You like it there. Do you feel any Earthquake? Are the bridges cool?
Riley
Yeah, it's good. What happened with the playoff?
Meg
We won the first game. Coach says we might actually go to the finals this year. Oh, and we've got this new girl on the team. She's so cool.
Disgust
Uh, she did not just say that.
Fear
A new girl?! Meg has a new friend already?
Disgust
Hey, hey, stay happy. We do not want to lose any more Islands here guys.
Meg
We can pass the puck to each other without even looking. It’s like mind reading.
Anger
You like to read minds, Meg?! I've got something for you to read, right here!
[grabbing the controls]
Disgust
No, no, no. What are you doing?
Fear
Wait, wait, wait! Let's just be calm for one second...!
Anger
GAAAAAAH!!!!
Meg
I heard they have parrots living in-
Riley
I gotta go.
Meg
What?
Riley
I gotta go!
[angrily; closes her laptop]
Joy
Okay, could you please just please tell me which way is... Oh, no! Friendship Island! What! Oh, not Friendship.
Sadness
Oh, Riley loved that one. And now it's gone.

Memory Manipulation Among Emotions
Joy
Wait. What? What happened?
Fear
She did something to the memory.
Joy
What did you do?
Sadness
I just touched it.
Joy
That shouldn't make it change.
[tries to fix the memory back to gold yellow, but it stays blue]
Fear
Change it back, Joy!
Joy
I'm trying!
Anger
You can't change it back?
Joy
No, I guess I can't.
Disgust
Good going, Sadness. Now when Riley thinks of that moment with Dad, she's gonna feel sad. Bravo.
Chaos of Emotions in Decision Making
Disgust
On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this day an "F".
Anger
Well, why don't we quit standing around and do something?
[throws down a copy of "The Mind Reader" with the headline, "RILEY QUITS HOCKEY!"; kicks a chair]
Disgust
Like what, genius?
Fear
Like quitting! That's what I'm doing. Sure, it's the coward's way out, but this coward's gonna survive!
[walking towards the recall tube with a suitcase; the tube closes around him, but he clogs it up and the massive amount of memory orbs force it open and he lands back down on the floor]
Disgust
Emotions can't quit, genius! Ugh! I thought we were supposed to be keeping Riley happy!
[Fear has accidentally swallowed a disgusting memory and spits it up, making Disgust recoil]
Anger
Wait a minute, wait a minute! Ah-ha!
[runs over to the idea shelves; grabs a bulb, and laughs]
Fear
What is it?
Anger
Oh, nothing. Just the best idea ever.
Disgust
What?
Anger
All the good Core Memories were made in Minnesota. Ergo, we go back to Minnesota and make more. Ta-da!
Fear
Wait, wait, wait. You're saying we...run away?
Anger
Well, I wouldn't call it that. I'd call it the "Happy Core Memory Development Program".
Fear
You can't be serious!
Anger
Hey! Our life was perfect, until Mom and Dad decided to move us to San Fran-Stink-Town!
Fear
But-but-but I mean, it's just so drastic!
Anger
Need I remind you how great things were there? Our room, our backyard, our friends.
[recalls a happy memory, but instead it plays the annoying gum commercial]
Singers
TripleDent Gum will make you smile...
Anger
DID I ASK FOR THE GUM COMMERCIAL?! Anyway, it was better, that's my point.
[shuts off the jingle]
Disgust
Yeah. Riley was happier in Minnesota.
Fear
Wait, hold on. Shouldn't we sleep on this or something?
Anger
Fine, let's sleep on it. Because hey, I'm sure jolly, fun-filled times are just around the corner!
Understanding What Lies Within Others

Frustration Over School Day Conversations
Bill
Ah! So... Riley, how was school?
All
Aw, Seriously? You gotta be kidding me!
Jill's Anger
For this, we gave up that Brazilian helicopter pilot?!
Anger
Move! I'll be Joy.
Riley
School was great, alright?!
Jill
Riley, is everything okay?
Riley
Argh...
Bill's Fear
Sir, she just rolled her eyes at us.
Bill's Anger
What is her deal? Alright, make a show of force. I don't wanna have to put the foot down.
Bill's Fear
No, not the foot!
Bill
Riley, I do not like this new attitude.
[sternly]
Anger
Oh, I'll show you attitude, old man!
Fear
No, no, no, stay happy!
[Anger punches Fear away]
Riley
What is your problem?! Just leave me alone!
[angrily]
Bill's Fear
Sir, reporting high level of sass.
Bill's Anger
Take it to DefCon 2.
Bill's Fear
Your heard that gentlemen. DefCon 2!
Bill
Listen, young lady, I don't know where this disrespectful attitude came from...
[sternly]
Anger
You wanna piece of this, pops?! Come and get it!
Riley
Yeah? Well, well...
Bill's Anger
Here it comes. Prepare the foot!
Bill's Fear
Keys, to Safety Position?! Ready to launch on your command, sir?
Anger
AAARGH!!
Riley
JUST SHUT UP!!
[furiously]
Bill's Anger
FIRE!
Bill
THAT'S IT! GO TO YOUR ROOM! NOW!
Riley
Hah! Gah!
Bill's Fear
Foot is down. The foot is down!
All
Woo!
Bill's Anger
Good job, gentlemen. That could've been a disaster.
Jill's Sadness
Well, that was a disaster.
Helicopter Pilot
Come, fly with me, gatinha.
Bing Bong's Unclear Identity Explained
Joy
His rocket makes us yell Hooray.
Joy, Bing Bong
Bing Bong, Bing Bong!
Sadness
What exactly are you supposed to be?
[to Bing Bong]
Bing Bong
You know, it's unclear. I'm mostly cotton candy. But shape-wise, I'm part cat, part elephant, part dolphin.
Joy
Dolphin?
Bing Bong
You got to remember. When Riley was 3, animals were all the rage. The cow goes "meow", the horse goes "oink". That's all people talked about back then.
[imitates a dolphin, with his trunk folded to resemble a dolphin's snout]
Joy
Yeah. Yeah. I guess that's true. What are you doing out here?
Bing Bong
Well, there's not much call for imaginary friends lately. So I, you know...
[taps his fingers a bit, then sulks]
Joy
Hey, hey. Don't be sad. Tell you what. When I get back up to Headquarters, I'll make sure Riley remembers you.
Bing Bong
You will?
[cheering up]
Joy
Of course! She'd love that!
Bing Bong
This is the greatest day of my life!
[laughs happily; does his happy dance, but pulls a muscle and sits down to cry in pain]
Joy
Are you okay?
Sadness
Hey, what's going on?
[confused]
Bing Bong
I cry candy. Try the caramel. It's delicious.
Exploring the Unknown with Emotions
Bill
Here we go, all right, open.
Joy
Hm, this looks new.
Fear
Think it's safe?
Sadness
What is it?
Bill
Aah...
[inches the broccoli towards Riley]
Disgust
Okay, caution! There is a dangerous smell, people. Hold on, what is that?
[enters the screen; notices the broccoli]
Joy
This is Disgust. She basically keeps Riley from being poisoned, physically and socially.
[narrating]
Disgust
That is not brightly colored or shaped like a dinosaur. Hold on, guys...It's BROCCOLI!
[gags and presses a button]
Little Riley
Yucky!
[flips the bowl of broccoli, getting some on Bill's face, and adding a disgusting memory]
Disgust
Well, I just saved our lives. Yeah, you're welcome.
[proudly; the other three sigh in relief]
Bill
Riley, if you don't eat your dinner, you're not going to get any dessert.
Anger
Wait, did he just say we couldn't have dessert?
[looks up from his newspaper titled "The Mind Reader", the headlines saying "NO DESSERT!"; puts the paper down and begins stomping towards the console]
Joy
That's Anger. He... cares very deeply about things being fair.
[narrating]
Anger
So that's how you want to play it, old man?! No dessert!? Oh sure, we'll eat our dinner, right after YOU EAT THIS! ], making Little Riley scream in anger and throw a tantrum and adding an angry memory]
[the top of his head begins to glow with embers; pushes a couple of levers and screams while his head erupts like Hades from [[Hercules (1997 film)|Hercules]
Bill
Riley, Riley! Here comes an airplane!
[imitates airplane, bringing the broccoli closer to her as she calms down]
Anger
AAAAH...!! Oh, airplane. We've got an airplane, everybody.
[instantly calms down]
Emotions
Oooooohh...
[they all gather around and watch the "airplane", and Riley happily eats it, adding a happy memory]
Joy
And you met Sadness. She...Well she...
[the screen shows Riley bawling like mad over different situations: ripping her teddy bear, dropping her ice cream on the floor, being dragged out of the store and being forced to go home]
Chaos in the Mind's Emotional Landscape
Disgust
What is going on?
[walking into Headquarters, sleepy along with Anger thanks to Riley waking up from a nightmare]
Anger
He did it again!
Fear
We were at school, and we were naked, and there was a dog, and his back half was chasing him, and then we saw Bing Bong...!
[curled up in a fetal position under the control panel]
Anger
You idiot! It was a dream! This is ridiculous! We can't even get a good night's sleep anymore. Time to take action. Stupid Mom and Dad. If they hadn't moved us, none of this would've happened. Who's with me?
[stomps toward the idea shelves; picks up the idea bulb that he had planned to use; glances over to Fear]
Fear
No, no, no, no, no.
[stammers a bit]
Disgust
Yeah. Let's do it.
Anger
She took it. There's no turning back.
Disgust
So how are we going to get to Minnesota from here?
Anger
Well, why don't we go down to the elephant lot and rent an elephant?
[sarcastically]
Fear
Hey, that sounds nice.
Anger
WE'RE TAKING THE BUS, NITWIT! There's a bus leaving tomorrow. Perfect!
[Fear winces and dives behind Disgust; Riley is now on a city bus website on her laptop]
Disgust
A ticket costs money. How do we get money?
Anger
Mom's purse.
Disgust
You wouldn't.
[gasps in shock]
Anger
Oh, but I would. Where was it we saw it last?
[smugly; recalls a memory, only for the umpteenth time it plays...]
Singers
TripleDent Gum...
Anger
NO! It's downstairs somewhere. Mom and Dad got us into this mess, they can pay to get us out.
[shuts off the jingle; Fear shrieks and faints]
Recognizing Emotional Distress Among Friends
Jill's Sadness
Did you guys pick up on that?
Jill's Joy
Sure did.
Jill's Disgust
Mmm-hmm. Something's wrong.
Jill's Anger
Should we ask her?
Jill's Sadness
Let's probe. But keep it subtle, so she doesn't notice.
Jill
So, how was the first day of school?
Anger
She's probing us.
Disgust
I'm done. You pretend to be Joy.
[shoves Fear in front of the console]
Fear
What? Okay. Um, hmm.
Riley
It was fine, I guess. I don't know.
Disgust
Oh, very smooth. That was just like Joy.
Jill's Anger
Something is definitely going on.
Jill's Disgust
She's never acted like this, before. What should we do?
The Growing Complexity of Emotions

[high-fives with Bill's Anger]
Bill's Anger
Ha! Told you it was a great idea.
Jill's Anger
Best idea he's had in a while.
Jill's Sadness
He's a really good guy.
Unforeseen Challenges in Riley's Life
Joy
And that's it. We love our girl. She's got great friends and a great house...things couldn't be better. After all, Riley's 11 now. What could happen? What?

Anger, Fear, Sadness and Disgust
