ABC and Will Arnett Are Reviving 'The Gong Show'
Classic game shows have made a comeback, and ABC is ready for more. A new version of "The Gong Show" is set to bring a combination of humor, talent, competition, and Will Arnett to the network.
We don't know yet if the comedian-slash-actor will actually appear on the show, but he'll executive produce the revival. Like its 1970s predecessor, which was created and produced by Chuck Barris, the show will feature amateur performers competing for the approval of a revolving panel of celebrity judges in front of a live audience. What's new, however, is that the contestants will be found in more modern way: the Internet.
In the original, the gong could be used by the judges during particularly bad performances to show their dislike. That the title hasn't changed seems to indicate that the instrument will carry over to the new version as well. We also hope to see its brand of quirky humor return, including its running gags and bizarre prizes. Arnett's involvement is definitely a good sign.
So far, we have 10 episodes of "The Gong Show" to look forward to. The series comes from Electric Avenue Productions, Principato Young Entertainment, and Sony Pictures. Arnett will executive produce alongside Evan Prager, Jesse Ignjatovic, and Peter Principato, with Jared Morell, Jordan Barrow, and Marc Forman all co-executive producing.
