The biggest scandals of the '90s have been coming to screen in recent years, so it was only a matter of time before we saw the Lorena Bobbitt trial again.

Amazon Studios has ordered a docuseries called "Lorena" that includes Oscar-winning screenwriter Jordan Peele as one of its executive producers, Deadline reports. Over the course of four parts, the docuseries will revisit the infamous scandal that blew up in 1993 after it was reported that Lorena had cut off husband John Bobbitt's penis one night while he slept. Although the story became something of a national joke, there were serious allegations launched on both sides. Lorena admitted to having assaulted her husband, but she claimed she had done it because John had raped and abused her multiple times in the past. The jury ultimately found her not guilty due to insanity, and the couple went on to divorce.

"When we hear the name 'Bobbitt' we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full-blown media spectacle," Peele said in a statement, according to Deadline. "With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena's story and we're honored to help her tell it."

"Lorena" director Joshua Rofé added that the team's goal is to make the public look at scandals more critically. As he pointed out in a statement, there can be "profound pain and trauma just beneath the surface of stories like Lorena's."

The docuseries comes from Monkeypaw Productions, Sonar Entertainment, and Number 19, with Peele and Rofé executive producing alongside Win Rosenfeld, Steven J. Berger, Jenna Santioianni, and Tom Lesinski. So far, it doesn't have a release date yet, but it is one we'll keep an eye on.
