"American Idol" will live to sing another day. The reality singing competition has been renewed for a second season on ABC and its 17th season overall.

ABC brought back the series, which first ran for 15 seasons on Fox from 2002 to 2016 before it was canceled. Their version had new judges — Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie — and the same host, Ryan Seacrest. There was also a new voting system that allowed viewers to cast ballots live. And performances and eliminations were mashed into one episode per week.

While no longer the ratings behemoth it once was in early seasons on Fox, "American Idol" has done well for ABC and boosted its Sunday night lineup. Earlier this week, the first live show's ratings matched the season premiere.

These promising results likely drew sighs of relief from ABC executives, especially since "Dancing With the Stars" seems to be showing some fatigue. Still, "American Idol" is very pricy for the network, with reports of a $25 million salary for Perry.

"We knew that 'American Idol' on ABC would unleash an opportunity for singers from all walks of life to realize their dreams and that these incredible contestants would have America rooting for their success," said Channing Dungey, ABC Entertainment president. "I am thrilled that Katy, Luke, Lionel and Ryan will be back to once again embark on this Idol journey with us to discover the next crop of inspiring talent."
