Watch Angela Lansbury Sing 'Beauty and the Beast' at 25th Anniversary Celebration
Disney's Oscar-nominated animated classic "Beauty and the Beast" turns 25 this year, and to celebrate, Disney co-hosted an anniversary event with the Film Society of Lincoln Center this past weekend in New York City.
Among the original cast members present for the festivities -- which included a screening of the flick -- were Robby Benson (who voiced the Beast), Paige O'Hara (Belle), Richard White (Gaston), and Dame Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Potts). It was Lansbury who stole the show, though, when after the credits rolled she performed a rendition of the movie's iconic theme song, which she also sang in the movie, alongside composer Alan Menken, who accompanied the actress on piano.
The crowd was clearly thrilled as Lansbury took the stage, and the 90-year-old proved she's still as perfect as ever as Mrs. Potts, imbuing the track with the same tenderness and sweetness she brought to the song more than two decades ago. It was enough to turn even the most stubborn beast into a pile of mush, and the actress earned a deserved standing ovation when she finished (and reenacted some of her dialogue from the film, too).
The upcoming live-action remake certainly has a lot to live up to. We hope Emma Thompson, the new Mrs. Potts, is taking notes.
