11 Scary AF Indie Horror Movies From the Last Decade
Horror movies are big business, but that doesn't mean you need big-name directors or stars. Some of the best scary movies are indies. With "Hereditary" hitting theaters, here are a few smaller scary movies you might have missed.
'The House of the Devil' (2009)
Writer-director Ti West is on our must-watch list, thanks to this groovily retro horror film set in the '80s: A pretty babysitter agrees to a job at an isolated house on the night of a full moon. What could possibly go wrong?
'You're Next' (2011)
Possibly the home invasion movie to end all home invasion movies: When three heavily armed masked men descend on a remote country house and begin killing off family members, one woman (Sharni Vinson) emerges as an unlikely killing machine herself.
'A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night' (2014)
In "the first Iranian vampire Western," writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour creates a haunting feminist icon for the ages with the beautiful but deadly black-cloaked "Girl" (Sheila Vand).
'The Babadook' (2014)
In this brilliant first-time feature from Aussie director Jennifer Kent, the ghoulish Mr. Babadook from a children's book terrorizes a single mother and her hyperactive son.
'Goodnight Mommy' (2015)
In this shivery Austrian horror film, twin boys are alarmed when their mother -- who's just undergone an unnamed operation that leaves her face covered in bandages -- begins acting strangely. The situation between the sons and their "mommy" escalates slowly, with increasingly disturbing actions on both sides.
'It Follows' (2014)
The free-floating horror of the ever-changing thing following our heroine after a one-night stand is only made that much more unnerving by the film's surreal style. Just when you think this movie's going to zig, it zags, into some very strange, unforgettable territory.
'The Final Girls' (2015)
In this clever and funny homage to cheesy '80s slasher films, Taissa Farmiga and her friends gets trapped in her late mother (Malin Akerman)'s shlocky cult classic, "Camp Bloodbath." She's got the chance to bond with her mom, but she's also got to stay one step ahead of the Jason-like killer!
'Spring' (2015)
Lou Taylor Pucci (the best thing in the "Evil Dead" remake) stars in this horror romance that's been called a Lovecraftian version of "Before Sunrise." After the death of his mother, he takes off to Italy, where he falls for the beautiful but mysterious Louis (Nadia Hilker), who has a disturbing secret.
'The Invitation' (2016)
This slow-burn exercise in paranoia from Karyn Kusama ("Girlfight") centers on a man reeling from a terrible tragedy. At a dinner party thrown by his ex-wife and her new husband, he's the only one who's suspicious when they begin talking up their new cult-like group.
'The Witch' (2016)
This extremely unconventional horror film -- about a family of New England puritans who turn on each other when they suspect a witch is causing their many misfortunes -- marks the bold debut of Robert Eggers.
'Hereditary' (2018)
This unnerving, slow-burn horror movie crawls under your skin and tugs at your heartstrings in between panic breaths as one family struggles with painful secrets that may give way and reveal a supernatural threat within.
