'Birds of Prey' Casts Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Black Canary, Huntress
Girls rule, villains drool!
"Birds of Prey" has cast Jurnee Smollett-Bell ("Underground") as Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Fargo") as Huntress to join the gang headed by Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.
Robbie, who is a producer on the movie, reportedly pushed for diversity in the casting process.
Black Canary aka Dinah Laurel is skilled at hand-to-hand combat and comes from a family of crimefighters (including her mother, who preceded her in the role). Huntress aka Helena Bertinelli is a mafia princess turned vigilante in Gotham City.
The movie is still looking for actresses to play Rene Montoya, a lesbian detective in the Gotham police force, and Cassandra Cain, reimagined as a 12-year-old Asian girl.
Once the crew is assembled, they'll battle Black Mask, a Batman comic villain who has never appeared on screen before.
Cathy Yan is directing and filming is set to begin in mid-January in Los Angeles. No release date has been scheduled yet.
