Carrie Fisher Will Be in 'Star Wars: Episode IX,' Brother Says (UPDATE)
UPDATE: Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy later said Carrie Fisher will actually not be in Episode IX, despite Todd Fisher's reports. She figures he was just "confused." Here's more from Kennedy.
Original post:
Carrie Fisher's legacy will continue into "Star Wars: Episode IX." The late "Star Wars" icon's brother, Todd Fisher, told the New York Daily News that Disney/Lucasfilm want to bring Princess/General Leia back for Episode IX, and both he and Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, have given the studios rights to use recent footage for the final movie of the new trilogy. As the Daily News Put it, "It is understood that CGI will not be used to recreate Leia."
Instead, it sounds like director Colin Trevorrow and company will use cut scenes from director Rian Johnson's Episode VIII, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," to include Fisher in Episode IX. After Fisher died in December 2016, it was reported that she had finished filming her scenes for "The Last Jedi," which opens this coming December 2017. So including further footage of her in the next film might be the best way to continue with the plan to have Leia in every movie.
"Both of us were like, 'Yes, how do you take her out of it?' And the answer is you don't," Todd Fisher said of himself and Billie Lourd. "[Carrie is] as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that's what's happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue." He said he wasn't sure how Leia would fit into the upcoming storyline. "I'm not the only part in that equation, but I think the people deserve to have her. She's owned by them."
Nah, she was never owned by anyone. But we loved every second she was with us, and this might be the happy medium we need to keep seeing her without the use of a CGI. You may recall the rumors that came out in January that Episode IX might include a CGI Fisher; and StarWars.com issued a statement to clear up that talk:
"We don't normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher's performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.
Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars."
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" opens December 15. Episode IX is scheduled for release in 2019.
