Chris Rock Didn't Really Sell $65,000 Worth of Girl Scout Cookies at the Oscars
Thin Mints were all the rage at the Oscars on Sunday, but not quite at a $65,000 level.
Host Chris Rock did a bit where he sold boxes of cookies for his daughters' Girl Scout troop to the millionaires sitting in the audience. Celebs like Kate Winslet, Mindy Kaling, and Olivia Munn all ponied up, and later, Rock announced that they'd sold $65,243 worth.
But a Girl Scout rep told TMZ that they sold around 500 boxes of cookies at $5 per box, totaling around $2,500. The much bigger number was just a joke as part of Rock's bit.
Not only that, his daughters aren't even members of the Inglewood, California troop that benefited from the Oscar sale. Rock's daughters are in a troop based in New York.
Still, the Girl Scouts are thrilled with the exposure Rock gave them. "You can't buy that type of publicity for the Girl Scouts," troop mother Linda Spradley Dunn told Access Hollywood. "That was a wonderful thing that he did."
