'Dancing With the Stars' Has Surprise Engagement & Sad Double Elimination
The first (and, let's hope, only) double elimination of "Dancing With the Stars" Season 23 aired Tuesday, October 4 before the vice presidential debate.
Earlier on Tuesday, host Tom Bergeron warned that bad news was coming; he tends to get the results in advance for rehearsals, and sometimes he tweets out teasers on the results:
With 2nite's double elimination, surprises await. And the danger of supporters not voting becomes clear. @DancingABC Results 8/7C #DWTS

Gulp! However, the first surprise of the night was a happy one. Pros Sasha Farber and Emma Slater, a longtime couple in real life, danced together to a live musical performance. Then Tom handed over the hosting duties to Sasha, who proceeded to propose to Emma:
Congrats!
But as they planned their lives together, two couples had to say goodbye, based on the judges's scores and viewer votes from Monday's Week 4 Cirque du Soleil performances.
On that show, Laurie Hernandez earned the first perfect score of the season (30 out of 30) for her Michael Jackson Jazz, and Babyface hit the bottom of the scoreboard with a messy Tango that got him an 18/30. Surprisingly enough, Marilu Henner and six-time champ Derek Hough were only slightly higher than the bottom with 21/30.
Here are the Week 4 scores:
Laurie Hernandez & Valentin Chmerkovskiy: 30
James Hinchcliffe & Sharna Burgess: 28
Terra Jolé & Sasha Farber: 25
Maureen McCormick & Artem Chigvintsev: 24
Amber Rose & Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 24
Calvin Johnson Jr. & Lindsay Arnold: 23
Jana Kramer & Gleb Savchenko: 23
Vanilla Ice & Witney Carson: 23
Ryan Lochte & Cheryl Burke: 22
Marilu Henner & Derek Hough: 21
Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds & Allison Holker: 18
Babyface& Allison seem destined to leave, so it would've been a surprise if they stayed. But their safety was not to be: They were announced as the first elimination of the night:

The second elimination came down to Jana & Gleb vs. Vanilla & Witney. Turns out, Ice was not so nice this week, and he and Witney were sent home second, victims (most likely) of the middle-of-the-pack blind spot. Voters sometimes overlook couples who seem safe but aren't that high on the scoreboard. Also, Vanilla barely had any time to rehearse last week with his crazy concert schedule, and even though the judges gave him decent scores, his lack of commitment to the show may have left some viewers feeling like he wasn't focused enough to merit votes.
