Definitive Ranking of Every 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Holiday Episode
If there's one thing "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" always nailed, it was their holiday episodes. From Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas, Joss Whedon knew exactly how to make us laugh, but also feel all the feels. Here is a definitive ranking of every holiday episode from "BTVS."
6. 'All the Way' (Season 6)
Dawn's in trouble, it must be Tuesday. In the weakest Halloween episode of the series, Dawn lies to Buffy (shocker) and then ends up almost getting killed by a vampire. While this episode brought laughs and joy, thanks to Anya and Xander's engagement announcement, it also lost the funny the other holiday episodes have. We get it, Dawn's a teenager who wants to rebel. Next.
5. 'Amends' (Season 3)
The only Christmas episode of the series decided to keep the funny on the backburner and focus on the drama. The First -- who we meet again in season 7 -- attempts to use Angel to kill Buffy. Obviously it doesn't work, but it leads to Angel making amends (hence the title) for all the wrong he's done. Also, snow in Sunnydale? We know it sits on a Hellmouth, but come on.
4. 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered' (Season 2)
For Valentine's Day, Xander wants what he usually wants: attention. And boy does he get it. The episode is funny, but watching Buffy try to seduce Xander is pretty uncomfortable.
3. 'Halloween' (Season 2)
The first holiday episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was, naturally, a Halloween episode, and they knocked it out of the park. Buffy turning into a helpless princess? Check. Willow turning invisible thanks to her ghost outfit? Check. Xander being useful thanks to his military costume? Double check. This episode is hilarious and fun. The big bad of the ep was one we weren't too worried about, so we just got to sit back, laugh, and enjoy.
2. 'Pangs' (Season 4)
"Pangs" was the only Thanksgiving episode of the series, and probably because they didn't think they could top it. It is one of the most quotable episodes of the series. For example: "A bear. You made a bear? Undo it. Undo it." And "It is a sham. But it's a sham with yams. It's a yam sham." Plus, even though it was mostly a fun, filler episode, it ended on a note that would affect Buffy for episodes to come. Perfect.
1. 'Fear Itself' (Season 4)
The winning champion of this amazing list is Halloween ep "Fear Itself," which gives us the absolutely perfect balance of hilarity and emotion. The Scooby Gang is forced to face their very real fears, but it is thanks to a demon who would make one adorable pet. The gang comes out stronger and can still laugh even after a terrifying night. Plus, Oz's God costume is the best.
