Ed Sheeran Will Be in 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 as a Gift to Maisie Williams
Hope you're in love with the shape of "Game of Thrones" Season 7.
GoT showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were with stars Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) at a SXSW panel in Austin on Sunday, and they announced another guest cameo.
Benioff: "For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it."
Not a big fan of celebrity cameos on any show -- it's a distracting gimmick that takes away from the story -- but it is sweet to think of the showrunners working behind-the-scenes to make one of their best and brightest stars happy. Then again, it's not like she's never met him or couldn't hang out with him elsewhere.
Sheeran addressed the news with a link to a post on his appearance:

There were rumors that UFC fighter Conor McGregor would have a cameo this season. Past seasons have featured musician cameos from Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, Will Champion from Coldplay, Sigur Rós, and Mastodon. As Vanity Fair noted, we don't know yet if Sheeran will be performing or singing (or both) or if he'll have an unrecognizable cameo like the members of Mastadon, who played zombified wildlings.
During the panel, the showrunners talked about the boring, unglam process of shooting a cameo. They said Jonsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros wanted to leave after he shot his close-up during Joffrey's wedding in Season 3, and didn't realize he'd have to hang out for several more days. (You may recall Sigur Ros's haunting cover of "The Rains of Castamere.")
Weiss: "A lot of [music artists] say they would they would like to [be on the show], and then we tell them [shooting a scene] is so boring. 'You're gonna hate this — you're going to be sitting around three days for 12 hours a day.'"
Then stop giving cameos to musicians? Season 7 premieres July 16 on HBO.
