Dorothy Gale is definitely not in Kansas, and "Emerald City" is definitely not a typical telling of "Wizard of Oz."

NBC unveiled the trailer for the upcoming drama, which premieres January 6, and it has all the right elements: the tornado that whisks Dorothy (Adria Arjona) from her home; the wicked witch she accidentally kills; the dog by her side; the brick road; and the wizard at the end of it. But everything has a twist to it, from the warrior "munchkins" to the "scarecrow" she finds crucified by the side of the road. This is one dark and twisted Oz.

As Dorothy tries to find her way home, she finds herself stuck in a war between witches Glinda (Joely Richardson) and West (Ana Ularu). And Dorothy soon learns that she may hold the key to saving Oz.

"Emerald City" premieres Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
