First Look at New 'Doctor Who' Jodie Whittaker in Costume
New Doctor, new look.
BBC One unveiled the first image of Jodie Whittaker in costume as the next "Doctor Who." Whittaker is the first woman to play the role in its 50-year history, taking over from Peter Capaldi. The "Broadchurch" star makes her debut in this December's Christmas special, when the Doctor regenerates.
Whittaker's Doctor sports cropped teal pants, yellow suspenders, a navy sweater with stripe, combat boots, and some quirky earrings. She also wears a coat, as all Doctors do, though hers looks lighter and a bit more modern than previous tweed numbers.
While some fans grumbled about a woman as the Doctor, many others lauded the choice by new showrunner Chris Chibnall (also the creator of "Broadchurch").
After the casting announcement last summer, Whittaker said, "I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and 'Doctor Who' represents everything that's exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one."
