Sean Penn Furious at Chris Rock for 2005 Oscars Joke

Producers have high hopes for Chris Rock's return as host of the Oscars. The last time he took the stage marked one of the higher-rated shows in recent years.

But not everybody may be so welcoming. During his opening monologue at the 2005 ceremony, Rock got at least one star miffed with this riff on Jude Law's busy acting career.

Oscars 2005: Chris Rock Takes Aim at Jude Law at Oscars

"Who is Jude Law?" Rock asked. "Why is he in every movie I have seen the last four years? He's in everything. Even the movie's he's not acting in, if you look at the credits, he made cupcakes or something. He's in everything. He's gay, he's straight, he's American, he's British. Next year he's playing Kareem Abdul Jabbar in a movie."

It wasn't Law who took offense. Instead, Sean Penn, before announcing the Best Actress Award winner, had a few choice words for Rock.

"Forgive my compromised sense of humor, but I did want to answer our host's question about who Jude Law is. He's one of our finest actors," said Penn to what sounded like a smattering of applause.

Unfortunately, even Rock couldn't rally enough interest in the award show, which hit an eight-year low and ranks as the third least watched Oscars ever, Deadline reports.

And Rock didn't manage to host the Oscars again without offending someone. "Glee" actor Harry Shum Jr, Jeffrey Wright and basketball star Jeremy Lin took offense to a "crude" Asian joke the comedian cracked, ushering out children in costume as Oscar-night PriceWaterhouseCoopers accountants.
