Polar Vortex Interrupts Production on 'Empire,' 'Chicago PD,' and 'Proven Innocent'
As if the dangerous cold temperatures weren't bad enough, the recent polar vortex is having an impact on TV shows.
Production on multiple TV series has been temporarily put on hold, Deadline reports. Shows including Fox's "Empire" and "Proven Innocent" and NBC's "Chicago P.D." have been affected, as they shoot in Chicago. The city's temperatures reached minus 23 degrees on Wednesday and could dip to minus 27 on Thursday, according to the Chicago Tribune. Multiple deaths have been linked to the Midwest's current cold spell.
Fox has not announced when its shows will resume filming, but NBC said "Chicago P.D." will begin production again on Friday. Currently, the National Weather Service's wind chill warning for the area is slated to end at noon on Thursday. Plans presumably hinge on local weather.
Meanwhile, in spite of the cold, both NBC's "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Med" have been able to continue productions. The shows are both filming inside and out of the elements.
It remains to be seen if the production delays will have any impact the air dates of upcoming "Empire," "Proven Innocent," and "Chicago P.D." episodes.
