'Game of Thrones' Season 7: Littlefinger's Sansa Plans Could Backfire, Says Aidan Gillen
The Great Game just gets more and more complex.
When "Game of Thrones" Season 6 left off, it was clear that Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish (Aidan Gillen) was trying to use Sansa (Sophie Turner) against her own family member, Jon Snow (Kit Harington). We're going to see more of that when Season 7 finally gets here, but according to Gillen, Littlefinger's manipulation might not play out as intended.
"With carefully laid plans there's always a bit of risk involved," the actor recently told Entertainment Weekly of his character's scheming. "He puts himself in a situation that could backfire on him."
Of course, the devious character knows that his plan isn't "fail safe," as Gillen says. He realizes that Sansa isn't a mindless puppet, and that she could cause problems. Interestingly, though, the actor suspects Littlefinger enjoys that risk.
"My character is becoming quite aware that Sansa is becoming as bright as me and just as wary of my manipulations of her," he told EW. "They're onto each other. They use each other. They enjoy each other. And they keep a lot from each other."
Simply put, their relationship is complicated, and that's what is going to make it so interesting when "Game of Thrones" Season 7 premieres on July 16.
