'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Star Teases Future of Bran & Meera
"Game of Thrones" may have shut down that intriguing fan theory about Meera Reed, but that doesn't mean the character's game is over. Actress Ellie Kendrick talked to MTV about Meera's role in Season 7, and it sounds like she's basically Bran Stark's Secret Service agent.
"Meera's main job is the protector. She's not going to storm in there and tell everyone what to do. She's the bodyguard. She's the one who's got Bran's back, and she's making sure that he gets to the places he needs to get to. She sees this as her duty to carry out this mission for him. It's in her blood; the Reeds are fiercely loyal to the Starks, and she'll give everything that it takes to protect Bran."
Bran does need protecting, since he can't walk and he spends a lot of time having visions of the past and future, leaving him vulnerable in the present. Kendrick compared Bran to Eleven in "Stranger Things," teasing more Bran visions ahead in Season 7:
"I love the story line he has because he's this kid who's been forgotten, but he has these incredible powers to unleash," she told MTV. "It makes me think of 'Stranger Things' a bit. He looks small and weak, and yet he's got this immense strength and capability of mind. That's going to be one of the most exciting things in the coming episodes because he can reveal all of the past and the future."
Meera has kind of a thankless job, she's giving up her life to drag Bran around, but she believes in him and it does seem like he is a major key to the future of Westeros. So you could argue her sacrifice is at least as important as the men of the Night's Watch, or maesters of the Citadel.
Up until the end of Season 6, some fans were speculating that Meera's role could be a lot bigger than just Bran's bodyguard. A theory suggested she might be Jon Snow's twin sister, raised by Howland Reed while Jon was raised by Ned Stark, since both men were at the Tower of Joy when Lyanna Stark gave birth, and both Meera and Jon are said to be the same age.
Back in February, before Season 6 aired, Kendrick told Digital Spy she'd love for the twins theory to be true, but she didn't know.
"I think what's been going on in [author] George RR Martin's brain is so much more a complex wormhole than we could possibly imagine. I think there's definitely a mystery to Meera and Jojen and their parentage, but I think it'll unwind itself eventually."
However, in November, after the Season 6 Tower of Joy sequence played out, only showing Jon Snow's birth, Kendrick seemed to allow that it wasn't looking good for the twins theory.
"It seems quite conclusive in terms of Jon's parentage," she told Huffington Post. "I don't know. We've still never really seen where Jojen and Meera have come from. We know a little tiny bit about her father. We don't know anything about her mother, really. So yeah, I'm excited to find out who her parents are and what the situation is."
Hopefully we do get those answers someday. The Reeds have been very loyal to the Starks, but that doesn't mean their stories aren't important as well.
"Game of Thrones" Season 7 is now filming, and it will start airing its seven episodes in the summer of 2017.
