Golden Globes 2019: The Biggest Snubs and Surprises
Shed a tear for "This Is Us." The NBC drama was shut out of the 2019 Golden Globe nominations.
This morning's announcement brought plenty of snubs and surprises in both the movie and television categories.
"This Is Us" missed out on a nomination as Best TV drama, and stars Sterling K. Brown, Mandy Moore, and Chrissy Metz did not receive a third nomination in a row. Brown's snub is especially shocking since he won the trophy last year, becoming the first black man to do so.
The TV drama category in general experienced a major shake-up, with past nominees "The Handmaid's Tale" (last year's winner) and "Westworld" also ignored in favor of new entries "Homecoming," "Bodyguard," and "Pose."
Here are some of the other biggest snubs and surprises from the 2019 Golden Globe nominations:
SNUB: The stars of 'Black Panther'
While the movie was nominated Best Motion Picture - Drama, Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan were left out of the Actor and Supporting Actor categories.
SURPRISE: All the 'BlacKkKlansman' love
Spike Lee's latest joint cracked the Best Motion Picture - Drama category and netted him a best director nod. It also gave John David Washington his first-ever Golden Globe nomination. Adam Driver also received notice for his supporting role.
SNUB: Ethan Hawke
The actor earned rave reviews for his searing performance in "First Reformed" and has been a major figure in Oscar buzz since the movie first hit the festival circuit.
SURPRISE: Elsie Fisher
The young star of "Eighth Grade" gave a moving and nuanced performance in the coming-of-age dramedy. And The Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues its track record of finding and elevating young talent.
SNUB: 'Widows'
The heist movie has all the ingredients for an awards contender: an Oscar-winning director in Steve McQueen, a star-studded cast led by Oscar and Golden Globe winner Viola Davis, and rave reviews. Yet it was entirely shut out.
SNUB: 'A Quiet Place'
The mega-hit horror flick not only raked in big bucks at the box office, but was one of the year's most critically acclaimed films. While it did get a Best Original Score nomination, star and director John Krasinski was shut out, as as co-star and wife Emily Blunt (although she was nominated for "Mary Poppins Returns").
SURPRISE: All the 'Pose' love
Ryan Murphy's groundbreaking series is the first with a mostly transgender cast to be nominated for Golden Globe awards. And star Billy Porter was singled out for his standout performance.
SNUB: Ted Danson
"The Good Place" and Danson's co-star, Kristen Bell, received nominations, but nothing for the architect himself! This is the bad place.
