'Goofy, Adorable' Baby Groot Starts Over in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'
There are so many reasons to be excited for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," and one of them is definitely to see the "new" Groot. Vin Diesel is back to voice the talking tree, whose sacrifice in Vol. 1 transformed him into a tiny version affectionately dubbed Baby Groot.
Collider talked to Diesel while he was promoting "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk," asking if there's a difference between the Groots of Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Here's what he said in his video chat:
"Yeah, there is a difference. He couldn't be more naive as Baby Groot. This is -- I always think of the Groot that we saw on the first 'Guardians' as a college-level Groot. So he's not fully grown yet, but he's a man. Once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak, so we're gonna see kind of this goofy, adorable, Baby Groot thing running around the screen and just kind of learning as he goes. Yeah, I think people are gonna love this movie. I think people are gonna love 'Guardians.' I know that, on the first one, I, like, recorded six different languages, and now James Gunn wants to increase the number of languages that we do this in. So, every ADR-ed line, every moment in the movie I have to do like 15, 16 times in different languages..."
Diesel added that it's "cool" because his voice is now being heard where they may never have heard him before, since voice actors in different countries usually get to say the lines in their own languages. "So I love that, but it definitely makes it that much more challenging."
Chris Pratt has already promised that Vol. 2 will be "the biggest spectacle movie of all time," and director James Gunn recently said it will crush the Bechdel test. And now we're looking forward to watching cute little naive Groot taking his baby steps through life.
We'll see the results in theaters starting May 5th, 2017. As you wait, why not re-watch this clip of Baby Groot getting his mini groove on:
