Two women will anchor "Today" for the first time ever, following the announcement that Hoda Kotb will join Savannah Guthrie as co-host of NBC's morning show.

Kotb replaces Matt Lauer, who was fired in November for "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace." She has been filling the chair temporarily since his departure, but now the network has made it official. Kotb will also continue to co-anchor the fourth hour of Today with Kathie Lee Gifford.

"This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made and I am so thrilled," Guthrie said on the air this morning.

(This is not the first time two women have hosted a morning show together; Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts did it on "Good Morning America.")

The allegations against Lauer and his subsequent firing rocked NBC News and the "Today" show crew. At the time, on her first morning as temp co-host, Kotb said, "This is a very tough morning for both of u. I've loved Matt for 15 years, and I've loved him as a friend and as a colleague, and again just like you were saying Savannah, it's hard to reconcile what we are hearing with the man who we know, who walks in this building every single day."
