The familiar tale of "Jekyll & Hyde" is getting yet another big screen adaptation, this time based on a Broadway musical about the famous split personalities.

Alexander Dinelaris -- who won an Oscar for co-writing the script for Best Picture winner "Birdman," and received a Tony nomination for writing the Gloria Estefan musical "On Your Feet!" -- is set to pen a film based on the 1997 show "Jekyll & Hyde." Dinelaris will also produce, with partner Rob Quadrino, through their Lexicon banner.

The original "Jekyll & Hyde" musical production, based on the classic 1886 novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, was conceived for the stage by Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden, and premiered in 1997. Wildhorn wrote the music, Leslie Bricusse wrote the book, and Wildhorn, Bricusse, and Cuden penned the lyrics.

"After 30 years of our stage productions playing successfully in almost every major country in the world, we are absolutely thrilled to see our musical version of Jekyll and Hyde becoming a major motion picture," said Bricusse and Wildhorn in a statement.

Dinelaris added in his own statement: "Bringing the gritty potential of Leslie and Frank’s stirring gothic musical to the big screen made 'Jekyll & Hyde' the perfect project to launch Lexicon, which is focused on character driven, muscular storytelling."
