Julianne Moore and Ellen Page play a lesbian couple fighting for equality in the drama “Freeheld,” inspired by true events.

Though it’s an important moment in the gay rights movement, its complex political-social subject matter wasn't the easiest to explain, the Oscar winner recalled to Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” on Tuesday.

"It's about the fight for domestic partnership in New Jersey and paved the way for marriage equality," Moore explained, paraphrasing her crew members who answered questions from onlookers as they filmed in New York City.

Finally, she said, everyone involved just had to break it down into the most simplistic terms. Moore says, "It's like, okay... it's where the lady from "Boogie Nights" is a lesbian with the girl from "Juno."

The gay-rights film chronicles the fight of New Jersey detective Laurel Hester, played by Moore, who after 25 years of service to her community is diagnosed with terminal cancer and battles public officials for the right to have her pension benefits left to her domestic partner Stacie Andree, played by Page.

“Freeheld” opens Friday.
