Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy Announce Split

They've headlined movies, TV shows and even have stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Of course, you cannot truly achieve A-list celebrity status until you announce your breakup through a joint statement and press conference.

That time has come for Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, whose stars threaten to eclipse recently defunct couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. The pair issued joint statements via Twitter on Tuesday, confirming their split after nearly 40 years together.

"After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, we have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship."

Continuing: "We will continue to work together on television and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter... unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding."

The exes' well-synchronized comments on social media arrived moments after Kermit revealed to reporters during a Television Critics Association panel Tuesday that they are no longer an item.

"It's a day-by-day, moment-by-moment process," Kermit explained at the event. "Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically."

Arriving fashionably late, Miss Piggy followed up and let it be known that she's suffering no heartache as they prepare to share the screen this fall in ABC's "The Muppets."

"It's good publicity," she said. "I'm glad we're broken up. This is going to be great for moi's stardom. Now everybody's going to worry about oh, who's she dating? Who's she getting caught snogging with?"

Previously, Kermit and Miss Piggy made their big screen debut in 1979's "The Muppet Movie" and eventually got hitched in 1984's "The Muppets Take Manhattan." Most recently they hit the box office again 2011's "The Muppets," co-starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams.
