Will Smith's 'King Richard' Gets 2020 Release Date
The upcoming Richard Williams biopic starring Will Smith officially has a release date.
"King Richard" is due out on Nov. 25, 2020, Deadline reports. The film centers on Williams, father and coach to tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams. Reinaldo Marcus Green ("Monsters and Men") will direct, per Variety.
Smith will play Williams, who famously raised two tennis champions with only a limited background in the sport at the time he decided to do it. Venus and Serena became amazingly successful, both reaching the top of their sport as singles and doubles players. Venus has won seven singles Grand Slam titles and Serena a whopping 23. They've also together won 14 women's doubles titles, not to mention multiple Olympic gold medals.
"King Richard" will tell Williams's unlikely story, per an earlier Deadline report. It will look at the family's life in Compton, California, and the odds they overcame. The screenplay was written by Zach Baylin. Star Thrower's Tim and Trevor White are producing alongside Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter. The project's executive producers are Jada Pinkett Smith, Allan Mandelbaum, and Caleeb Pinkett. Warner Bros. is distributing.
It's still early, but mark your calendar for "King Richard" on Nov. 25, 2020 anyway.
