Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd wax nostalgic on just how accurate a picture of the future was painted when they starred in 1989’s “Back to the Future II.” The hit sequel offered moviegoers a look at what the world would look like in 2015.

We’ve got the proliferation of 3D movies (and multiple sequels) and fingerprint technology, the costars recall in a conversation set in a diner, all filmed in partnership with Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Mirai to promote the “Back to the Future” trilogy Blu-ray release on Oct. 21.

But self-tying sneakers? “I’m waiting for those,” Fox says, adding that unlike in their adventure-fantasy film, dog-walking robots have yet to come to fruition too. “We haven’t gotten there yet,” Lloyd responds.

Of course, memorably in the film, fax machines were featured as commonplace in a household as a table lamp. “Can you believe fax machines are still around?” Fox says. Lloyd, who turns 77 next week, contends that their film got it right when it predicted the fax machine’s popularity. True, but it’s now in decline with the advent of email and other electronic documents.

The segment, sponsored by Toyota, failed to point out one prediction from “Back to the Future II” that is no longer relevant: carmaker Pontiac, which featured its logo and a dealership, rather largely, in scene in "Back to the Future II." The automobile manufacturer, then a division of General Motors, ended production in 2009.
