TV Worth Watching

The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards (Sunday on NBC at 8 p.m. EST)
It's officially 2018, and awards season is upon us! The 2018 Golden Globe Awards air this Sunday, January 7 on NBC. Seth Meyers is hosting for the first time, so we should probably expect some political humor. But maybe he can also get Tina and Amy to at least cameo? Here's the full list of film and TV nominations. This is the first stop on the awards train that continues until the Oscars air in March.

"The X-Files" Season 11 (Wednesday on FOX at 8 p.m.)
They're baaaack! Season 11 picks up right after the Season 10 cliffhanger, as Mulder and Scully learn they're not the only ones searching for their long-lost son William. "The very fate of the world may depend on it" in the season premiere, "My Struggle III," airing January 3. The old gang is back, including Skinner and the Cigarette Smoking Man, plus some people (the new agents) you may not have wanted to see again.

"The Bachelor" Season 22 (Monday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
The usual disclaimer applies: This is not technically "TV Worth Watching" but any sane metric, but it is a long-standing guilty pleasure and it stays. For 2018, "The Bachelor" cast 36-year-old Arie Luyendyk Jr., Emily Maynard's No. 1 reject from her season of "The Bachelorette." Here are spoilers on who he picks, if you want to jump to the end.

• Midseason Returns
Now that the holidays are out of the way, networks are wasting no time getting back to business. Many shows are returning from midseason break this week, including "Lucifer," "Chicago Med," "NCIS," "The Blaclist," "Law & Order: SVU," "The Big Bang Theory," "The Good Place," "Will & Grace,: "Superstore," "Young Sheldon," "Mom," "Hawaii Five-0," "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," "MacGyver," "Star Trek: Discovery," and more.

• Season Premieres
There's a lot going on in the TV world this week, including the debut of the "Black-ish" spinoff "Grown-ish," following eldest daughter Zoey as she heads to college. There's also the debut of the Showtime series "The Chi" on Sunday; FOX's new airline comedy "L.A. to Vegas" starts Tuesday; plus, the new season of "Project Runway: All Stars" and the final season of "Nashville," both begin on Thursday. Try to keep up with all of it using handy calendars like this one.

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"American Made"Tom Cruise's latest action film -- based on the "outrageous, true exploits of a hustler and pilot" recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert ops in U.S. history -- arrives on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K this Tuesday, January 2. Extras include deleted scenes, several making-of featurettes, and a conversation between Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman.

"Battle of the Sexes"
Emma Stone and Steve Carell star in this comedy-drama based on the real 1973 tennis match between women's champion Billie Jean King and former men's champ Bobby Riggs. Bonus features include "Raw Footage: Billie Jean's Grand Entrance," "Reigniting the Rivalry," and "Billie Jean King: In Her Own Words." The film is already out on digital, and you can watch it on Blu-ray and DVD starting January 2.

"Brad's Status"
Ben Stiller stars as a middle-aged man on a journey of self-discovery in this star-studded (Jenna Fischer, Michael Sheen, Luke Wilson, Jemaine Clement) quirky comedy written and directed by Mike White ("School of Rock"). The movie is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand January 2, including four behind-the-scenes featurettes.

"The Houses October Built 2"
This sequel to the 2014 found footage horror film brings back Brandy Schaefer, Mikey Roe, and Jeff Larson, along with the original filmmaking team. "Recovering from the trauma of being kidnapped last Halloween by the Blue Skeleton – a group who take 'extreme haunt' to another level – five friends decide they must face their fears in order to move on." Watch what happens January 2 on DVD and Blu-ray. Bonus features include deleted scenes, an uncut projection scene, Portrait of a Scare Actor 2, and "Halloween Spooks" music video.

• Redbox: New titles coming to the big red box on Tuesday, Jan. 2 include "Despicable Me 3," "American Made," "The Mountain Between Us," "Brad's Status," "A Question of Faith," "The Last Days of Billy the Kid," "Anti Matter," "Rebound," "The Houses October Built 2," and "Last Rampage."

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital

"The 2018 Rose Parade Hosted by Cord & Tish" (Amazon Original)
The 2018 Rose Parade happens Monday in Pasadena, CA, and there's really no better way to watch it than with Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon. They star in this Amazon Original special, presented by Funny or Die, as hosts Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan. The special will be available to stream live starting at 8 a.m. PST, right as the parade starts, featuring entertaining commentary from Will and Molly. Here's a little promo:"Stratton"
Dominic Cooper stars in this action thriller arriving in select theaters and on Digital HD/On Demand this Friday, Jan. 5. After the death of his American counterpart, Stratton -- a Special Boat Service operative for MI6 -- and his team must race against time to stop a former Soviet operative from unleashing stolen chemical weapons. Austin Stowell, Gemma Chan, Thomas Kretschmann, Tyler Hoechlin, Tom Felton, Connie Nielsen, and Derek Jacobi co-star.

"Day of the Dead: Bloodline"
This reimagining of the late great George A. Romero's cult classic is "set in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled world where a former med school student is tormented by a dark figure from her past. The only thing is, he's a half-human, half-zombie hell-bent on destroying her world." Johnathon Schaech, Sophie Skelton, Marcus Vanco, and Jeff Gum star in the horror film, which is available in theaters, and on VOD and Digital HD on January 5.

"Harry Potter" and "Back to the Future" films on HBO
Like Netflix (see below), HBO also adds a bunch of new titles at the beginning of every month for fans to check out on HBO NOW. For instance, all eight movies in the "Harry Potter" film franchise, and the three "Back to the Future" movies, will "magically appear" on HBO starting January 1. Here's the full list of what's arriving, and what will be leaving on January 31.

New on Netflix
Today marks the start of a new year *and* a new month. Every month, on the first day, Netflix releases a bunch of new titles, and takes others away. This month, all three "Godfather" movies, four "Lethal Weapon" movies, five "Batman" movies, and five "Bring It On" movies will all arrive on January 1. Get the full list of arrivals here.
