Redheads Rejoice: 'It' Star Sophia Lillis To Play Nancy Drew
Sophia Lillis, who played evil-clown-fighting Beverly Marsh in "It," has lined up another iconic redhead role: Teenage sleuth Nancy Drew.
Lillis will star in "Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase," based on the second book in the series that was first launched in 1930. In the book, Nancy looks into the supposed haunting of an old Civil War-era mansion.
Ellen DeGeneres, Jeff Kleeman, and Chip Diggins will produce and Wendy Williams will serve as exec producer. Production is expected to begin soon.
The last time Nancy Drew was on the big screen was in 2007: She was played by Emma Roberts and the focus was more on makeovers than mysteries.
This could presumably be the first film of a franchise, since there are more than 50 Nancy Drew mysteries in the original series.
A recent attempt to reboot Nancy Drew as a 30-something sleuth on TV was deemed "too female"(!) for CBS.
Lillis will next be seen in HBO's "Sharp Objects," based on the book by "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn. Amy Adams stars as a reporter looking into the deaths of two teen girls in her hometown; Lillis plays the younger version of her character.
Lillis is expected to return for "It: Chapter Two." Jessica Chastain recently signed on to play the grown-up Beverly. (Naturally, we're also expecting her to play younger versions of Isla Fisher and Bryce Dallas Howard at some point.)
