Reese Witherspoon Says She Talked to Screenwriters About 'Legally Blonde 3'
Reese Witherspoon has one Elle of a chance at getting a "Legally Blonde 3" sequel in the work.
The star of “Legally Blonde” and its sequel “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde,” was honored at the 29th American Cinematheque Awards in Los Angeles on Friday, and spoke with Entertainment Tonight about the traction gaining for her to reprise her role as politically ambitious Elle Woods in a third installment of the comedies.
"The screeners wrote me and they said they were going to think about it," the Oscar winner tells ET about a possible sequel. Still, she admits that there are no commitments in place to revive the character for the big screen just yet, but the "Wild" actress think would be the perfect time to see a woman lead a political film.
"I think it's a really great time to talk about women in politics because we need more women in politics," she explains. "We're 50 percent of the population but we're only 17 percent of the government. We need some balance there."
Fan-supported traction to revive "Legally Blonde" began a week earlier after Witherspoon appeared on "Fashionably Late With Rachel Zoe" and responding to a fan's question, she said she would be delighted to revisit "Legally Blonde."
"I know people got excited about that," Witherspoon said of the reaction. Her costar and love interest in the film, Luke Wilson, told James Corden last Monday on "The Late Late Show" that he would like to see a third film to "win everybody back" after the sequel was not as well-reiceved.
It has been nearly 12 years since “Legally Blonde 2″ hit the box office. Both films were hits, earning $124 for the second installment and $141 for the first, which debuted in 2001. They have since enjoyed a TV replay afterlife.
