Rude or Funny? Jennifer Lawrence Fans Debate Golden Globes Reporter Incident
Was Jennifer Lawrence rude to call out a reporter in the 2016 Golden Globe Awards press room? Was the reporter rude to break out his phone? Are the fans being rude? Is no one rude and it's all a big misunderstanding/overreaction?
After JLaw won her Golden Globe for "Joy," she did what winners do -- she went to the press to answer a ton of questions. But now a brief clip from that Q&A is making the rounds, with Jennifer getting sassy with a foreign reporter who was attempting to ask a question -- while using his phone.
Here's a mini transcript:
Reporter: "How do see yourself for the Oscars night?"
Lawrence: "You can't live your whole life behind your phone, bro."
Reporter: "Huh?"
Lawrence: "You just can't do that. You gotta live in the now, you know?"
Reporter: "Oh, sorry! Sorry. [Laughs] How do you see yourself for the Oscar night, and how was working--"
Lawrence: "We're at the Golden Globes. If you put your phone down, you'd know that."
That's what has been making the rounds but, as Entertainment Tonight noted, it's only half of their exchange. If you watch the full video below, their talk comes around the 5:05 mark and includes the reporter laughing and asking a follow-up question, which she answered normally. It seemed fine, not exactly an awkward moment.
But the call-out led some fans to call Jen "rude," since he's obviously a foreign journalist and some fans speculated that he may have been using his phone to translate. But others who were actually there challenged that idea.
So now if you read the comments under that YouTube video, or on Twitter, or elsewhere online, the debate is raging on about whether she was rude or not.
For example, Jennifer Lawrence has an official Facebook page where she posted a photo thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for her Golden Globe award. The comment section of that post includes a heated debate, with opinions like this one:
Yuriria Marvan Evans: I'm going to have to unfollow you Ms. Lawrence. A reporter deserves respect. It was obvious that English was his second language, he might have needed his phone for translation, you didn't even let him finish the question. He knew he was at the Golden Globes, not the Oscars. Fame and money are not everything in life.
That has 2,628 "likes" at this point. However, it has also been challenged by people saying she was just being sarcastic, fans shouldn't be so easily offended, and the guy wasn't even using the phone for translating. Here's a reply to that post:
Alex Zimmer: You weren't in the press room, just ask to person who were there. Everybody in this room is saying he wasn't using his phone for questions or translation, he was taking picture of her, at the same time he was talking to her. She wasn't that rude. There are nicer way to talk, but she wasn't rude, she could have say " Look at me when you're talking." But she didn't. Stop doing drama for nothing."
What do you think? Was she rude to the reporter or just JLaw being the snarky lass we've always known and loved?
