In "Brooklyn," a young Irish immigrant makes her way to New York City on a search for a new start. As homesickness sets in, Saoirse Ronan's character Eilis Lacey finds distraction in a whirlwind romance.
The soul-searching quest--establishing a new home and forming bonds with others--is one that Ronan says she knows well. In fact, the 1950s period drama is simply a case of history repeating.
"It’s very much the journey that my parents made to New York," Ronan tells Made in Hollywood. "They had a very tight community over there and the Irish community was very supportive of each other."
For Ronan, relating to her character's plight was no challenge. "I moved away, myself, while I was making this film, so that whole feeling of homesickness and loss—I was completely in the middle of that while making the movie."
"Brooklyn" opens Friday. Watch the trailer below.
