The CW Expands Original Programming to Sunday Nights
The CW is growing! This fall, the network is expanding its original programming to Sunday nights, for a total of six nights across the week.
It'll be the first time in nine years that The CW airs original content on Sunday evenings. When the network launched in 2006, "7th Heaven" aired that night. But after that series ended, the night was leased to an outside production company and then given back to affiliate stations entirely in 2009.
"By expanding to six nights, The CW is now able to give our fans even more of the series they're so passionate about," said The CW President Mark Pedowitz.
The CW has always focused on younger viewers. Initially, shows were geared toward young women, but superhero hits like "Arrow" and "The Flash" have brought gender balance to the network.
With the news of the expansion, the network's order of nine pilots (a record) makes sense. Already, the CW airs 15 scripted originals and most are likely to be renewed. Some of its high-profile pilots include a spinoff of "Supernatural" and reboots of "Charmed" and "Roswell."
One project that won't be on The CW next fall is a spinoff of "Riverdale" that is touted as a dark take on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." The network developed it, but ultimately let it go to Netflix, which ordered two seasons.
