'The Interview' Is Coming to Netflix Streaming on January 24
Fresh off its huge haul from online sales, "The Interview" is making its Netflix streaming debut.
The Sony comedy, which set off a worldwide firestorm after the studio briefly cancelled its release following threats of violence from alleged North Korean hackers, will now be available to stream on Netflix starting on January 24.
"We are thrilled to offer exclusively the controversial comedy, 'The Interview,' to our US and Canadian members," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a statement.
"The Interview," starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, has continued to rake in the dough in digital sales since it debuted in limited theatrical release and on VOD simultaneously on Christmas Day. The flick has been a huge hit online and through cable and satellite services, where it's grossed more than $40 million; it's made about $6 million in box office gross.
While theater owners, who dropped the film following the announcement of the VOD strategy and under pressure from the hackers' threats, warned that Sony could lose up to $30 million on the flick, the studio must have made up for that with this Netflix deal. No information about how much the streaming service paid, or how long the film will be on the service, was announced.
