Showtime Makes 'The L Word' Sequel Official With Series Order
It's official: "The L Word" sequel series is happening.
Showtime announced during a recent TCA presentation that it has given the project the greenlight. The upcoming series will again focus on the lesbian community, and it will show what has and hasn't changed since the original aired. The news comes as "The L Word" turns 15 and a year after the revival was reported to be in the works.
The original series ran from 2004 to 2009, and it shared interwoven storylines featuring lesbian characters. It was a groundbreaking series, one that offered rare representation to queer women. The show was a frequent nominee at the GLAAD Media Awards.
Showtime has given the sequel an eight-episode order, and Marja-Lewis Ryan is on board to serve as the showrunner and an executive producer. Although she is new to the jobs, she is joined by the original series creator, Ilene Chaiken, who is also executive producing. Fellow EPs include original "L Word" stars Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig, and Leisha Hailey. The three actresses are expected to reprise their respective roles in the sequel.
We bet fans have at least one other "L Word" to describe the news: lovely.
