'The Leftovers' Season 3 Premiere Ends With Mind-Bending New Mystery
We, the fans, "The Leftovers" and now it's finally here. Season 3, the final season, starts Sunday, April 16 with "The Book of Kevin." The episode will time-jump three years after Miracle, Texas was overrun by the Guilty Remnant in Season 2. The seventh anniversary of the Sudden Departure is approaching, and many believe another major event will happen on October 14.
A fan asked TVLine for scoop on this Sunday's premiere, and the answer revealed the episode will end with a mind-bleep, launching a new mystery:
Question: Have you seen The Leftovers Season 3 premiere? Any intel on it and/or the final season in general? —Roger
Ausiello: Roger that, Roger. The closing scene of the April 16 opener made me spit my Diet Half 'n Half Snapple all over my MacBook Air. It's a massive mind frak that launches a new mystery — and one I'm told we will get an answer to by the series finale. Also, if you enjoyed last season's alt-reality, standalone ep "International Assassin," then you are going to fall head over heels for its quasi-sequel, Season 3, Episode 7's "The Most Powerful Man in the World" — aka the series' second-to-last episode ever. [...] Oh, here's one more Leftovers tidbit: Amy Brenneman's Laurie figures prominently in these final eight episodes.
That all sounds amazing, especially the part about Episode 7 -- because "International Assassin" (Season 2, Episode 8) was genius.
Premiere director Mimi Leder added more big picture details to TV Guide:
"I would say the overall theme of Season 3 of The Leftovers is about our belief systems. It's about the stories we tell ourselves to bring meaning and clarity to our lives, bring us peace, maybe some hope, some happiness. I think life is hard and I think Season 1 was about the Event and Season 2 was definitely a reaction to that and Season 3 is the stories we tell ourselves."
"The Leftovers" Season 3 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
