'This Is Us' Actress Cast as Squirrel Girl in Marvel's 'New Warriors'
Marvel has found its Squirrel Girl.
The comics company and Freeform have selected the cast for the upcoming scripted comedy "New Warriors." The fan-favorite character of Squirrel Girl will be played by Milana Vayntrub, best known as Sloane from "This Is Us." Sloane was a playwright and brief love interest for Kevin (Justin Hartley).
Squirrel Girl is the show's most high-profile role, with major names like Anna Kendrick and Mae Whitman tossed into the casting mix. Barb from "Stranger Things" — aka Shannon Purser — also led a personal campaign to land the part.
Squirrel Girl (real name: Doreen Green) is an optimistic mutant with the powers of a — you guessed it — squirrel.
Meanwhile, the male lead of the show will be Freeform alum Derek Theler, who will take on the role of the slacker Mister Immortal.
The other cast members include Jeremy Tardy as shameless self-promoter Night Thrasher; Calum Worthy as people-pleasing Speedball; Matthew Moy as hypochondriac Microbe; and Kate Comer as low-level telekinetic Debrii.
"New Warriors" is expected to debut sometime in 2018.
