'This Is Us' EPs Reveal Season 3 Details on Premiere, Beth and Toby Back Stories
The Big 3 will have another big day when "This Is Us" returns for its third season this fall.
Co-showrunners Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker revealed that the Season 3 premiere will again center on the shared 38th birthday of Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Kevin (Justin Hartley).
And as the season goes, the NBC family drama will "catch up to all of those [flash-forward scenes from the Season 2 finale] over the course of this year," Aptaker told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour.
As fans will recall, those flash-forward scenes included Kevin traveling to Vietnam with his new girlfriend/Beth's cousin, Toby (Chris Sullivan) suffering from depression, and a much older Randall visiting his adult daughter Tess.
And the executive producers teased that they'll finally reveal some of Toby and Beth's (Susan Kelechi Watson) back stories. Those flashbacks will dovetail with current storylines.
“We’re going to be seeing Toby go through various challenges," Berger said. "Obviously, we showed last season their journey to have a family. That’s a journey that we’re going to be continuing this year, and there’s going to be the stresses of your first year of marriage.”
Still, the season won't be all stress and doom and gloom, especially now that the question of how Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) died is out of the way.
“This is a hopeful season," Berger said, "and a season about true new beginnings for everybody.”
"This Is Us" premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
