Second Half of 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Season 4 Gets 2019 Premiere Date
After the recent revelation that the fourth and final season of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" would be split into two parts, Netflix played it coy about exactly when the second batch of episodes would launch. Now, fans finally have a firm premiere date for the rest of those installments.
TheWrap was first to report -- followed by an official announcement by Netflix itself -- that season 4.2, which will consist of six episodes, will hit the streaming service on January 25, 2019, nearly eight months after the debut of the first part of the season. While fans may be frustrated about the long wait, one silver lining about the long break is that now both halves of the season will be eligible for two different Emmy years. (Season four hit Netflix on May 30, one day before the May 31 cutoff for submissions for the 2018 Emmys.)
But what about that rumored movie that was initially said to be wrapping up the series in lieu of a traditional finale episode? That's still up in the air, according to star Tituss Burgess, who told TheWrap that discussions about the movie were ongoing, but no definitive decision had been made yet. And in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator and showrunner Robert Carlock also said that there are plans in place to make a wrap-up film, but details still need to be finalized with Netflix.
"We now have a shorter runway than we originally thought we would and don't want to overstuff it and rush it," Carlock told THR of finishing season four with a satisfying end for Kimmy and co. "And there are things that I think would be fun to hold off for kind of a big epic finale in feature form."
We'll keep our fingers crossed that the movie plan pans out. In the meantime, you may as well binge all the "Kimmy" you can until January 2019.
