Will the crew of the "USS Callister" boldly go where no "Black Mirror" episode has gone before — into a spinoff?

"USS Callister," the first episode of Season 4 of the Netflix sci-fi anthology series, has been a breakout sensation since it debuted last Friday. So much so that episode director Toby Haynes hinted at the possibility of a spinoff.

"I was talking with Louise Sutton, who produced this and 'Metalhead,' and she cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning it off into a TV series," Haynes told the Hollywood Reporter. "I'd love to do a TV series of 'USS Callister' — it's probably one of the best pilots for a space show, ever."

The episode ended in a way that left the door open to continuation. Written by series creator Charlie Brooker and William Bridges, "USS Callister" followed Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), a socially-awkward programmer and CTO who co-founded a virtual reality game. He uses a modified version at home based on his favorite "Star Trek"-like space drama, using digital clones made from his co-workers DNA. "Captain Daly" inflicts torture on them as payback for their real-life behavior toward him.

In the end, the virtual version of new employee Nanette Cole (Cristin Milioti) figures out a way for the crew to escape Captain Daly and his game. They enter the vast, unending space of the multiplayer game, with Cole now at the helm.

"I think Charlie might revisit it as a 'Black Mirror,'" Haynes said of a potential spinoff or sequel. "Whether I'm the one to do it, I don't know. Being a fan of the show as much as I am, and being a part of making it, I'd love to work with that crew and cast again. It's a gift for a director."
